Harlequin Shrimp (Hymenocera picta)

Updated: 5 days ago

Harlequin Shrimp's (Hymenocera picta) diet consists on certain types of starfish. They use an ingenious method to handle their prey.

Instead of trying to detach a firmly attached starfish, these creatures have developed a strategy of flipping the starfish onto its back. This simple action causes the starfish to lose its grip on whatever surface it was clinging to, making it significantly easier for the shrimp to then move the starfish to a safer place where they can consume it.
